I would not wish it on anyone.
It’s humbling, frustrating, and overwhelming.
For example: you send out resumes, and there are no replies. You participate in networking meetings that go nowhere afterwards. You interview (multiple times over the course of many months) and you don’t receive job offers.
At times you wonder, “Why am I doing this?”
You know you are good at what you do. “Why can’t other people see it too?”
Yet, as hard as a job search can be, you know when it is harder to stay where you are.
Feelings of being comfortable or cautious can keep you safe, but those feelings do not move you forward. They prevent you from experiencing work you love.
A job search is about fresh beginnings, moving forward, and breaking new ground. It’s about exploring who you are and what’s important to you. It’s about digging deep, shedding the old, and finding yourself again; someone who wants to be found.
With the right mindset, you can move through anything. You can be effective in your job search.
So how do you move through it?
1) You decide to move through it.
Every successful career endeavor starts with a decision. “I want something different.” It’s the place to begin. These words are the first step to your new role because you are declaring your intention. This is when you get your power back.
2) You decide what you want.
Ask yourself. “Do I have clarity?” If not, what is your next step? Is there research required? Is there someone you can talk to? If you can’t see it, you can’t do it. Seeing is crucial.
3) You decide to do the work.
Getting a new job cannot be a “should” or someone else’s goal for you. An internal spark gets ignited when you realize you have had enough and the timing is right to do the work. No one can decide this for you. Can other people assist you in your journey? Yes. But this decision comes from you. That is when things change for the better.
4) You decide to move now.
Career fulfillment doesn’t just come to you. You have to proactively go for it. Working on your career is not a one time “I tried” activity. The work happens over time. We are an instant gratification society and job searching is not an instant gratification activity. You don’t see progress immediately. But, you will as you continue. Movement comes first. Rewards come second. Keep moving. No matter what. This formula is the keys to your kingdom.
